I always laugh at the "Gateway" drug argument. If you make the argument that people who try cocaine and other hard drugs smoked pot first, then you have to go one or two steps farther back and realize that most people smoke cigarettes and drink alcohol first, so those are the real geteway drugs.

IMO, the only reason folks who smoke weed are more likely to try the harder drugs, has more to do with the legal issues than the fact that they smoked pot. When you smoke pot, you are breaking the law and it makes it easier to break the law again by using other illegal drugs. If pot was legal, it would be a bigger and more serious step to graduate to harder illegal drugs.

That being said, I believe that all drugs should be legal. Then you wouldn't be wasting all those billions of dollars on the futile "war on drugs". Not only could you re-direct those funds to substance abuse education, recovery programs, health-care and any number of other worthwhile and worthy causes, but you would also raise more money for those causes by taxation. It would also take the violent criminal element out of the whole issue. During prohibition, the alcohol industry was controlled by the same type of thugs who run the drug business these days. With alcohol legal, that element has disappeared.

I remember an interview with Jerry once where he stated something to the effect that. that he thought that the government, instead of fighting the Drug War, should be doing research into and producing more efeective and less dangerous drugs.

George carlin, my favorite liberal by far... favorite comedian also... had a chance to see him in west palm beach but was broke (even though I am some rich neocon massad agent)... kinda like how I missed Zappa. At least I saw Jerry several times (and heard him from the parking lot more times than I can swing a road flare around on the roof during a blizzard).

Even g gordon liddy knew what time it was... 4:20.. I hate that phrase but no other witty comment would work there...

Ron Paul reminds me of the old-school Republicans, when they were the Progressive party, just progressive in a different way from Democrats. Think Teddy Roosevelt...who would probably approve of Ron Paul more than he did of Taft, his successor. Even the far-right William F. Buckley called for an end to the War on Drugs...it was wasting his tax dollars, you see. And yours and mine.
